Some people may say their Pokémon collection is worth its weight in gold, but could this be more than just an overused idiom? Well, for Gold Pokémon Cards this might just hold true. Today we are going to be looking at the 10 most expensive golden Pokémon cards.

What are Gold Pokémon Cards?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but no, Gold Pokémon Cards are not actually made of real gold. Yes, even the metal ones aren’t worth hiding in a treasure chest. A “Gold Card” is just a type of secret rare Pokémon card typically found in booster packs. Although, the metal versions have traditionally been promo cards released in special products.

Even though golden Pokémon cards aren’t made of real 24-carat magic, they can still be pretty valuable.

The Verdict

Time to come to a conclusion. Are Gold Pokémon Cards really worth their weight in gold? To figure this out we just need to do some simple math. First, a foiled Ultra Rare Pokémon card typically weighs 1.98 grams. Then, we need to multiply the weight of the card by the value of real gold. So, at the time of writing this article, for a Pokémon card to be worth its weight in gold it must be worth at least $142.19.

This means that the only Gold Card that is truly worth its weight in gold is the Ultra Ball from Plasma Freeze.

Honorable Mentions

Gold Shiny Mew - Celebrations - Pokemon Card

Mew (25/25)

Gold Lugia VSTAR - Silver Tempest - Pokemon Card

Lugia VSTAR (211/195)

Gold Metal Pikachu PROMO - Celebrations - Pokemon Card

Pikachu (Metal PROMO)

I am including these 3 cards in the list as honorable mentions because they are my 3 favorite Gold Cards that weren’t already included. The Secret Rare Mew from Celebrations is definitely my favorite of the 3 cards, though. The artwork coupled with the fact that it is a shiny Mew really just hits home.
